Since 2006 the Van Buren Pointers have won 18 regular season games out of a possible 70. Seven of those wins came in the 2010 season. Playing a tough 7A schedule is no excuse for the team.
“I think our biggest message to our team and our program is ‘No one feels sorry for you,’” said head coach Brooks Coatney.
“I love it,” said senior defensive end Cameron Farrow. “I look forward to it everyday. We play football to compete and when you compete you want to compete against the best and that’s what they give us and we are going to give them our best everyday.”
Last year was not their best and they’ll be the first to tell you that.
“Last year was a rough season for us,” said Farrow. “I felt like we competed pretty well, we just couldn’t finish whether it was offense or defense we just weren’t on the same page.”
“I just felt like we didn’t play as a team,” said senior quarterback Brad Eversole. “This year we are going to come out and play as a team, play fast, play quick and wear our team out and get more victories this year.”
These seniors were freshman in that 2010 season. Even though their class is small, they have confidence in their bond, and so does their coach.
“We just went to a senior retreat a couple of weekends ago,” said Eversole. “We all got pretty close on that, we all know what we want individually and as a team so I think we are going to come out and play pretty well.”
“You know, it’s their team,” said Coatney. “We are going to start with those guys and they have done a good job so far and hopefully they’ll lead us into a game Friday night at Alma prepared.”
