On this day in history, September 4, 1957, nine black students tried to enter Little Rock’s Central High School, which was racially segregated at the time. They were blocked by the National Guard. Governor Orval Faubus had summoned the federal troops to block them from entering.

On September 23, 1957 they walked into school to attend class by the intervention of President Eisenhower. He called on the National Guard and the 101st Airborne Division
