There is no love lost between Greenwood and Alma but a little fuel has been added to the fire this time around.
Twitter has been pushed to the limit with both Airedales and Bulldogs fan “discussing” the game this week. And the topic of choice, naturally, has been Greenwood’s 39 game win streak.
Greenwood’s streak is the sixth longest active streak in the country and sits as the third longest in Arkansas history. The Bulldogs have also beaten Alma eight straight times dating back to the 2005 season.
“It’s going to take a perfect game,” first year Alma coach Doug Lougridge said. “We’re playing a state championship type, caliber team this week. My hats off to them. That’s very impressive to win that many games in a row and never have a down week. That’s very impressive that coach Jones, his staff and players react to that.”
With Loughridge taking over the Airedales program, a fresh breath has been put back into the Alma community and causes problems for rival Greenwood.
“They’re a physical team and they have a very physical approach,” Greenwood coach Rick Jones said. “Doug is a good football coach. He had great success at Charleston. He’s been to other programs and had success there as well so we know they are a well-coached football team. They play very, very hard. They execute very well and our hands will be full. We know we have a challenge.”
Even though Alma has lost eight straight to it’s biggest rival, the two teams aren’t thinking about the past.
“Alma, they look pretty good this year but I think we’re going to come out and do our thing and we just going to take it to them,” Greenwood senior Michael Nelson said.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Alma senior Evan Burris said. “It gets everybody jacked up. The atmosphere at the games are pretty crazy too.”
