The executive director of the Bikes, Blues and BBQ motorcycle rally was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of drunken driving, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Joe Giles, 62, was arrested early Sunday morning on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. He was released about four hours later on $765 bond, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He has an Oct. 14 court date.

A breathalyzer test on Giles showed a blood-alcohol level of .099, according to a preliminary report.

A Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputy said he saw Giles’ black Chevrolet Suburban traveling east on North Street in Fayetteville without any lights coming from the back of the vehicle. During the subsequent traffic stop, the deputy smelled intoxicants coming from Giles and “saw a partially-opened cooler with a portion of a beer can visible,” according to the deputy’s narrative of the arrest.

Giles told the deputy he had been drinking and that there was beer in the cooler, according to a preliminary report filed with the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The report states Giles failed a field sobriety test and could not complete the portion that required him to balance on one foot. Giles reportedly told the deputy he had drunk several beers over the last five hours.

Giles was placed under arrest and given a breathalyzer test.
