A police chief in the River Valley has received top honors from his peers.

Alma Police Chief Russell White was named "Chief of the Year" at the Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police annual convention.

Chief White has been with the Alma Police Department for 32 years and has served as chief for the past 19 years.

The association supports law enforcement throughout the state. The top two officers from each department come together for the annual convention for continued training and education.

"It's always nice to be recognized by your peers," said White. "I can think of several that would be deserving of (the award), but I do. I love my career and what I do."

White said six fallen officers were also awarded for their service and sacrifice to the state during the awards ceremony.
