The Booneville Bearcats are trying to keep a low profile. So being named McDonald’s Team of the Week isn’t going to do them any favors. The Bearcats are a team to watch in the 4A after a 21-7 win over Star City last Friday, a team that beat them last year.
2013 is shaping up to be a special year, even more special than winning three of their last four conference titles.
“It was a playoff atmosphere,” said junior fullback Bryson May. “There’s nothing like beating someone that’s already beat you.”
That’s two redemption wins this year. Booneville also got revenge on Ozark, putting 49 points on them.
“We did that last year,” said senior linebacker Michael Springs. “We fell and picked ourselves up. That’s what we always do. We’re always underdogs so it doesn’t bother us.”
But this year, they’re really not. Booneville is ranked number four in the state. Everyone expects them to go deep in the playoffs.
“It’s good to know, but it doesn’t really mean anything,” said senior quarterback Cody Harrel. “Anyone can beat anyone on any Friday night. We just got to stay focused and keep practicing hard.”
“To get there we have to win our conference championship first,” said May. “As long as we do that and stay focused we should end up where we want to be.”
Conference play begins this weekend. Booneville is 3-0. They’re the defending champs. And everyone in the 4A-4 is gunning for them. They think it’ll only make them better.
“There are several teams in our conference that are very good,” said head coach Scott Hyatt. “We expect, as everyone does, to win the conference. It’s going to be a week by week deal, Friday night by Friday night.”
Booneville starts conference play at home this Friday against Waldron.
