A Fort Smith elementary school teacher will receive national recognition next week for her work in educating kids about something even adults struggle with: economics.

Sheila Humphrey has been a teacher for 25 years. Her students at Woods Elementary on Massard Road are actively engaged in hands-on learning simulations to understand the value of a dollar, consumables and services.

She will be awarded the John Morton Excellence in the Teaching of Economics Award at the Council for Economic Education National Conference in Baltimore, Md., Oct. 3-5.  The awards honor teachers whose innovative teaching concepts improve and stimulate economic understanding. Humphrey is the only national winner in the elementary division.

Humphrey has also been recognized statewide for her economic projects including titles such as No Bees, No Honey, No Work, No Money!, and Economics is a ‘Natural’ for Baseball.

Dr. Rita Littrell, the Director of the Bessie B. Moore Center for Economic Education at the University of Arkansas, will also be recognized. She will receive the Abbejean Kehler Technology Award. The award recognizes educators instrumental in promoting the use of technology in economic education.
