The Springdale Bulldogs are the McDonald’s Team of the Week after beating Rogers last weekend on a touchdown pass with one second left in the game. Originally, they lined up to kick a field goal and tie it. Then Rogers made one bad decision and it changed the course of the game.
“We lined up to kick the field goal,” said Springdale coach Shane Patrick. “When they called time out it gave us an opportunity to put the offense out there and run the play that we wanted to run.”
A 24 yard pass from Fuller Chandler to Drake Wymer, and the Bulldogs shocked the Mounties.
“Everyone was so hyped in the locker room, high-fiving each other,” said Springdale senior kicker Sam Kennedy. “Hard work pays off.”
Even with those late game heroics, one individual performance stood out. Running back Deandre Murray rushed for 312 yards on the night with three scores.
“It’s one of those things where he has so good moves in the open field that people are going to have a hard time tackling him once he gets passed the line of scrimmage.,” said Patrick.
This victory was huge because the winner of this game each of the past years years has made the playoffs. The loser has not.
“That helps a lot being the first conference game and coming out on top of Rogers with them being 3-0,” said Springdale senior receiver Quiency Patton. “Now we go into Fayetteville.”
The rivalry with Fayetteville used to be competitive. Springdale hasn’t won since 2008, though. Fayetteville has put up 168 points in the last four wins.
“It’ll take hard work again,” said Kennedy. “Fight until the end. It’ll be whoever is going to play to the end of the fourth quarter. Just don’t give up.”
