A little boy, saving his family just moments before their house went up in flames Sunday morning (Oct. 6).

The fire happened on South R Street around 9:30.

Ian Taylor said his 3-year-old son, A.J. ran out of his room this morning and said not to go in there.

"We looked in there and his bed was on fire," Taylor said.

The Taylor family ran outside, managing to get everyone along with a pet rabbit out safely.

"It spread really fast," Taylor said. "I mean we came out of the house and less than a minute later flames were already to the roof."

"When the first engine unit arrived on scene, he did say that he did have flames coming up out of the roof and that it looked like it supposedly started in one of the bedrooms," explained Battalion Chief Boyd Waters with Fort Smith Fire.

Taylor said they had turned on their heater for the first time Sunday and that A.J's bed is next to one of the heater vents.

"They're still working to figure out what caused the fire, but I bet that's it," Taylor said. "We had just turned [the heater] on."

The home suffered extensive damage and flames could even be seen shooting out from the roof when firefighters arrived on scene.

The Taylor family said they plan to stay with family until they are able to find a new home.

The home appears to be a total loss.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, Waters said.
