Rogers has been trying to get back to the upper echelon of the 7A-West since winning the league title in 2006.
Friday’s 59-point outburst against Har-Ber not only earned the Mounties McDonald’s Team of the Week honors but has them back in the playoff hunt.
“I feel like the Har-Ber game was just a game where we could show what we`re made of, show that we`re not just done for this season,” Rogers senior Giovanni Orsi said. “That we can come back, play against the big teams. Win. Put up a valiant effort and just really all buy into our program.”
“It was very important for us to get back on the winning track and give ourselves an opportunity to be able to get into the playoffs,” Rogers coach Shawn Flannigan said. “There is still work to be done as we`re not ensured a spot yet so we still have to get more wins as we go but I think it`s definitely a step in the right direction for our program and is a big win for our program.”
The Mounties triple option attack had struggled against the top teams of the 7A-West in recent history but all that was in the past last week.
“We just have to make sure that we`re happy with a four yard, five yard gain and that`s just how the offense is built,” senior lineman Quenton Clay said. “And then as the defense tires from those long, long drives, it helps build our momentum.”
“Sometimes everything clicks and just works right and that was kind of the case on Friday,” Flannigan said. “It was a perfect storm of our guys playing with extreme confidence and executing the game plan the way they needed to.”
