Deputies on Tuesday called off the manhunt for a Logan County man they say escaped from jail Monday, sparking a large-scale search by local authorities.

Investigators will continue to look for Gary Patrick Topham, but the large-scale manhunt is over, said Deputy David Spicer with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. Spicer said Topham escaped from the Logan County Detention Center in Paris on Monday morning by scaling a chain-link fence that surrounds the jail’s exercise yard.

The fence has wire on the top, along with an extra wall, but Topham was able to squeeze through, Spicer said.

After Topham’s escape, local authorities initiated a manhunt for the suspect. That search was suspended Monday night at 6:30 p.m., before the large-scale manhunt was called off Tuesday.

Topham, 49, was being held at the jail on suspicion of drug and failure to appear charges. Topham left the grounds of the jail Monday in his black and white striped jail uniform, but left his orange flip-flops behind, according to the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies received tips Tuesday on locations Topham may be, but nothing of substance materialized. Investigators are speaking with Topham’s friends and family to find more leads on the suspect’s location, Spicer said.

Topham failed to appear at his scheduled court date in a drug case, drawing an arrest warrant on suspicion of failure to appear. He turned himself in Friday and was booked into jail on $500,000 bond, Spicer said.

Topham is five feet, 11 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Anyone who sees him is encouraged to call 911.
