The McDonald’s team of the week was picked to finish seventh place in their conference. 10 weeks later, Lavaca is the No. 3 seed in the 3A-4. They went 2- 8 each of the past three years. Now, they host a playoff game this Friday night after so many years of frustration.
“It was crushing,” said senior lineman Isaiah Schoeppey. “To turn around and increase our work ethic and host a home playoff game is huge for this whole area.”
“These seniors have gone through a rough couple of years,” said head coach Mark Headley. “To get back in the playoffs is a big deal. I think the community is excited. I know the players are ready to go and it will be a big Friday night.”
Nobody on this Golden Arrows team has ever been in a playoff game before, and nobody expected it this year. But in the off season the team made one promise to each other.
“Our motto this year has been brotherhood,” said senior linebacker Colby Graves. “We have all embraced that. It’s been a big mantra for us as a team.”
“Come together as a team,” said senior center Jim Reid. “That’s all we needed. We got read. We prepared together. We got ready for Friday night when it got there.”
Lavaca is the definition of team work. They may not be strong in individual areas, but together, they are. It’s all thanks to a great group of seniors.
“It’s our mentality this year and our seniors have done a great job of leading,” said Headley. “They’ve stuck together and it has paid off for them.”
Lavaca hosts Osceola in the first round.
