A Fayetteville man was arrested Monday night after police say he fired a handgun into the air during a botched drug deal.

Demetrius Key, 21, was booked Tuesday into the Washington County Detention Center on suspicion of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of minors, public intoxication, committing a terroristic act and illegally discharging a firearm. He remained Tuesday in jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Fayetteville officers responded Monday night to West End Apartments in reference to shots being fired. Responders located Key at the scene and, through an investigation, found that the suspect took money for drugs, but failed to give any drugs to the purchasers, according to the Fayetteville Police Department.

After the purchasers became angry, Key fired a handgun into the air to avoid a physical confrontation, police said. The suspect then went into his home at 1218 N. West End Ave. and put his loaded gun down within reach of three children inside the home, according to police.

Responding officers arrested Key and transported him to jail. No one was injured.
