A man and a two-year-old child managed to escape a house fire in Panama early Wednesday morning.

Panama Police said they were called out at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday to a house fire at the corner of Choctaw and Missouri Road.  Both occupants were outside when crews arrived on scene.

Firefighters say the fire originated in a utility room of the home and spread to a nearby kitchen.  Responders were able to contain the flames mostly to that area, but some other parts of the home suffered water and smoke damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  Authorities have called out a state fire marshal to further investigate.
