With dry, cold weather moving into Northwest Arkansas, fire fighters are preparing for more fires.
But, they are working to prevent fires just as much, if not more.
The Rogers Fire Department receives a grant to be able to give members in the community free smoke alarms. Fire fighters will even come and install them in homes, free of charge.
Staff at the fire department also conduct a lot of fire prevention education lectures.
Bentonville, Springdale and Fayetteville will also provide smoke alarms to the community.
Rogers Fire Chief Tom Jenkins said that it is recommended to not have a smoke alarm more than 10 years old in a home.
There were multiple fires in Benton County this week as temperatures dipped into the teens.
Jenkins said a smoke alarm made all the difference in getting to a house fire on Levi Lane on Wednesday morning (Nov. 15). No one was injured and the house only received some damage.
Another house in Bella Vista on McNelly Road burned to the ground the same morning. Benton County Fire Marshal Marc Trollinger said it started when an occupant was putting wood into a wood fire stove.
Trollinger said he sees a lot of fires start as a result of someone dumping ashes from a wood stoves that may have had some hot coals in them. He suggests that people put ashes into metal buckets for a couple of days before dumping them.
