A 33-year-old Lincoln man died after being hit by a vehicle while standing in a Fayetteville road Thursday night, police say.

Police said Tarren Phillips, 33, was standing in the westbound lane of Martin Luther King Boulevard around 10 p.m. when a vehicle driven by Spencer Loos, 28, struck Phillips. Loos swerved to avoid striking the pedestrian, but was unable to stop the collision. Phillips, of Lincoln, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fayetteville police.

Eyewitnesses told police Phillips was intoxicated at the time of the collision.

The pedestrian was walking inside the lane of traffic when he was hit by the vehicle, police said. Authorities said light rain mixed with the dark road could have made it difficult for the driver to see.

No citations have been issued in the incident. Phillips' wife filed a protection order against him in Washington County less than two months ago, in which he states she is seeking a divorce.
