It was an icy drive this morning on I-540 from Fort Smith to Fayetteville as the first wave of winter weather moved in. Bridges and overpasses were starting to ice
over north of the tunnel where the temp was already down into the upper
20s by 9:30am with sleet and freezing rain falling. I observed drivers
pulling over to remove some of the ice off their wipers and windshields
that had been building up. Below is a shot of the ice on my car after
making the drive.
The upcoming winter storm has the potential to be a high impact event largely due to the accumulation of ice we are forecasting for parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Ice storms lead to travel disruptions and power outages that can last for days and sometimes weeks in severe cases. To better gauge impacts and aid in preparation, meteorologists with the National Weather Service have created an ‘Ice Accumulation Index’. This takes into consideration wind and ice accumulation totals.
Locally we are expecting some areas to receive between 1/4-3/4″ of ice accumulation with isolated higher amounts possible. This coupled with sustained winds between 10-15 mph with gusts into the 20 mph range would place spots in an index of up to the 3-4 range.
If power outages do occur where you live, it is important to have a plan in place ahead of time that includes adequate food and shelter for and prolonged period.
