Thursday (Dec. 12) marks a week since the winter storm pounded Northwest Arkansas forcing school to cancel classes. However, thousands of students head back to school after the unexpected week off.

School buses in the district ran limited routes because some streets are still icy.

At Buttlefield Trail Elementary School in Fayetteville, principal Joey Folsom said custodians were cleaning the campus ground to make students' return safe.

"They were working hard at making sure the sidewalks where the kids come up to school were all clear," Folsom said. "I think we were in good shape."

Folsom said they're working hard to get back on track.

'We've got music programs, spelling bees that kind of thing we'll have to reschedule and I just waited until we got here today so we can talk to the staff and do that," Folsom said.

June Mount dropped off her 9-year old daughter Victoria at Butterfield.

'The rest of the week my husband has been taking me to work and traffic hasn't been that bad but since school is back, traffic is back," Mount said.

Parents who were snowed in with their kids, said it's time to get back into a normal routine.

'It's been good, I've done more sledding in the last five days than I have in the last five years," Ben Crone said.

Andre Shell said, "I'm excited, ready for the kids to go back to school and learn."

Students will need to make up five days and three of those days are on Saturdays.

"Saturdays are always tough but we've done it before, we try to have a regular school day and go for it," Folsom said.

Regular Calendar Schools in Fayetteville:
First make-up day will be Saturday, January 25th

Third make-up day will be Saturday, February 8th
