Murphy’s law was in full effect at Boone Pickens Stadium Saturday afternoon.
If it could go wrong, it certainly did for the Poteau Pirates.
Anadarko scored 28 points in the final 15 minutes of the first half as the Warriors ran away with the 4A state championship by taking down Poteau, 40-0.
Poteau (12-2) trailed 7-0 in the closing minutes of the first quarter but Jace Pitchford’s pass was picked off by Anadarko’s Michael Shaw and returned 31 yards for a score. That turnover started an onslaught the Pirates could not stop.
Anadarko later scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone and took a 28-0 lead into the half.
Poteau had minus 10 yards of total offense in the first half and Pitchford was slowed by an injured right hand that was heavily wrapped.
Anadarko compiled a 54-2 record over the past four seasons, with a pair of state championships.
