16 vehicles ended up off the road Sunday morning because of icy bridges on Interstate 540 and the Fulbright Expressway, according to Fayetteville Fire Department officials.

At 7:51 a.m., emergency responders were called out to an accident on I-540 northbound in Fayetteville near the Fulbright Expressway. By 8:30 a.m., authorities had blocked off a portion of I-540 because the bridges had a “solid sheet of ice” on them, according to officials. A salt and sand mixture was laid on the bridges by the Arkansas Highway Department.

At least two of the 16 vehicles, were rollover accidents and all 16 vehicles had to be towed, according to officials. One person was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

The 16 accidents occurred on four different bridges in Fayetteville.

  • Two northbound on I-540
  • One southbound on I-540
  • One westbound on the Fulbright Expressway
