As the Christmas clock ticks down, organizers with the Salvation Army are praying for a Christmas miracle.

Even though the holiday season marks the busiest time of year for the Salvation Army, organizers said that donations are significantly down this year, compared to years past.

In Northwest Arkansas, the donations fell by about $110,000 from last year, according to Major N.J. Pope with the Salvation Army.

In the River Valley, red kettle donations are $80,000 less than expected.

Officials said weather was a contributing factor to the loss in donations. The ice storm kept volunteers from getting out for a couple of days to ring the bells.

The Salvation Army is behind multiple social service programs in the community: homeless shelters, the Angel Tree, food pantries, recovery programs, etc.

"If our funding doesn't come, we have to look like everyone else does in cutting back and determine what the priority is to cut back," Pope said.

The red kettles will be out until the end of Christmas Eve. Even though donations are behind, organizers said their Christmas deadline will not be extended to make up the profits missed.
