Parts of the River Valley and Northwest Arkansas are still feeling the effects of this month's ice storm as crews continue to clean up the aftermath left behind.
Southern Sebastian County was one of the hardest hit areas as ice and snow clobbered the region. People in the city of Greenwood saw significant damage to their homes, yards and power lines in the area as the storm swept through.
"It looks like a disaster area," said Greenwood resident Randy Clark.
Hundreds of families were left without power for the better part of five days after fallen trees and branches cut power to homes in the city.
Gail Willsey's roof was damaged by falling tree branches during the storm. She said a pecan tree and a shade tree will have to be removed from her property because they were damaged beyond repair.
Crews in Greenwood began cleaning up the damage Monday morning (Dec. 23), but Joe Manes, Director of the Street Department, estimates it could take up to three months to pick up all the debris.
Manes said the city decided to take on the project internally after receiving a $500,000 estimate from a local contractor. He said the city is working on getting funding from FEMA to offset the cost of the work.
Greenwood residents should place debris parallel to the street, away from utility meters and no more than 10 feet from the road. Tree limbs should be no longer than 12 feet.
Once the debris is picked up, it will be taken to a leased plot of land where it will be burned.
