Kids from across the region are preparing to open presents, some for the first time ever. The Children’s Emergency Shelter in Fort Smith houses about 12 boys and 12 girls ranging from 6 to 17-years-old. But, for most of them it's so much more than a home.

“All of our kids are from abused and neglectful backgrounds,” said Jack Moffett, director of the shelter.

Moffett says the anticipation is building for the kids. He has even had kids experience their first Christmas celebration at the shelter.

“We`ve seen kids before that have never had Christmas, that have never opened a Christmas gift,” he said. “To watch that, is just amazing.”

What’s even more amazing is what the kids give back to the volunteers in return.

“They remind me of what I need to be thankful for,” said shelter volunteer, Amber Boylard. “A lot of people get down this time of the year and they make you count your blessings.”

Moffett said himself; Bikers Against Child Abuse and Santa will be there bright and early Christmas morning.
