A Fayetteville man is behind bars this Christmas Eve after allegedly attacking and choking his teenage brother, according to local police.

Martell Terry Burton, 23, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of aggravated assault, domestic battery and endangering the welfare of a minor. He remained Tuesday in the Washington County Detention Center on $3,500 bond, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Burton got into a fight with his 14-year-old brother and choked him. Officers were called Sunday night to the Fayetteville apartment complex at 2691 N. Club Drive in reference to a fight in one of the apartment units, according to a preliminary report from the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.

The alleged victim told police Burton entered the apartment and attacked him. A six-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy were also in the room at the time, and they ran from the unit, according to the reporting officer.

The victim said Burton started choking him, restricting his breathing and causing him to fear for his life. Burton allegedly admitted to punching his brother, but told responding officers he did not remember choking him, according to the preliminary report.

The alleged victim suffered a swollen lip, bruises and redness around his throat, police said. The suspect had scratches and redness on his hands, the report states.

Burton was arrested by officers and booked into jail.
