The body of a local man missing since November was found behind Central Christian Church on North Waldron Road about noon Tuesday (Dec. 31), according to Fort Smith Police.

Sgt. Daniel Grubbs said the body of an elderly black man was found by workers who are remodeling the church. He said neither foul play nor suicide is suspected.

Police later identified the man as Merlin John Boyd, 76, a Fort Smith man who was reported missing Nov. 10. His body was taken away by the coroner and will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for further examination, according to Fort Smith police.

Boyd was a diabetic who was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, police said. Close friends who often care for him reported him missing after he was last seen having lunch at the Senior Center at Nelson Hall Homes in Fort Smith on Nov. 8, police said.

He was considered endangered at the time of the missing persons report.
