One person was killed in a motel fire in Fayetteville on Thursday (Jan. 9), officials said.

The incident happened just before noon at the Hi-Way Inn Motel, 1140 N. College Ave., Fayetteville police said.

The fire was reported after cleaners opened the door to room No. 120 about 11:30 a.m., and smoke came pouring out, officials said. The initial investigation indicates the occupant might have fallen asleep while smoking in bed, police said.

Authorities did not immediately release the victim's full name or age but said the person was from out of town, possibly Louisiana of Texas.

Police said the victim's first name might be "Ron," but that is unconfirmed.

The fire was contained to one room, officials said.

There was no other reported injuries.
