Elderly Driver Rescued From Car After Driving Off Road

An 89-year-old man was rescued by emergency crews after officers said he made a wrong turn and landed on the nose of his car in a drainage ditch.

"Basically, it was left suspended with the back tire caught at the edge, hanging in the air," said Sgt. Daniel Grubbs with the Fort Smith Police Department. "So it was quite a scene there for a little while."

Officers said the man was traveling north on N. 50th St. and thought he was turning right onto T Street. Grubbs said the man, who lives just a few blocks from where the accident happened, miscalculated the distance to T St. and turned early.

Medical crews said the driver told them he didn't realize his error until he was falling forward nearly ten feet down, landing on the nose of his car. Firefighters rescued the man who was still strapped into the car when they arrived.

Emergency crews treated the man at the scene for minor injuries to his knees. The man was not taken to the hospital and was picked up at the scene by his wife.

"Obviously by the depth and height of this, it could have been a lot worse," said Grubbs.

A tow truck was called to remove the car. The driver was cited for careless driving.
