5NEWS and the Northwest Arkansas Touchdown Club are launching a brand new high school football awards banquet called “Friday Night All-Stars.” The event will be held on Jan. 18 with Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema as the guest speaker. A special television broadcast of the event can be seen on Channel 5 Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11:30 a.m.
Here are the nominees for receiver of the year:
1. Chance Shelby, Charleston
2. C.J. O’Grady, Fayetteville
3. Gus Vitt, Har-Ber
Charleston’s Chance Shelby leaves as the leading receiver in every major category for the Tigers. He capped off his high school career with 75 receptions for more than 1,300 yards and 21 touchdowns.
“It`s been a great year for me,” Shelby said. “I`ve been lucky to have it. It helps with all the great teammates I have. Ty (Storey) is a great quarterback and puts it on the spot every time.”
Shelby helped the Tigers finish a perfect 15-0 and claim the 3A state championship.
Fayetteville’s C.J. O’Grady was a match up nightmare for opposing teams in 2013. The junior hauled in 46 passes for 900 yards and found the end zone 14 times.
“To be able to catch the ball like I did was amazing to me,” O’Grady said. “It shocked me as well as a bunch of other people.”
O’Grady received a scholarship offer from Ole Miss earlier this week.
Har-Ber’s Gus Vitt was consistently the go-to guy for the Wildcats’ offense.
Vitt finished with 49 catches for 877 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013.
“It`s a lot on the offensive line too. It was obviously fun to go with the flow and what happened happened,” Vitt said.
