Leah Williams, a Democrat and member of the Bentonville City Council, announced on Saturday (Jan. 18) that she is running for the state House District 93 seat, according to posts on social media sites.

Bill Burckart, a Republican and also a member of the Bentonville City Council, announced  Nov. 7 he also is vying in the 2014 election for the District 93 seat held by Rep. Jim Dotson, R-Bentonville.

Dotson, serving in his first two-year legislative term, is a former member of the Bentonville City Council.

On her Facebook page, the 30-year-old Williams notes she is originally from Milwaukee, Wis., and attended the University of Memphis.

According to a separate Facebook post on Saturday (Jan. 18) by D’Andre Jones, a Northwest Arkansas Democrat, Williams is the first Democratic candidate for that Benton County seat in more than 20 years and “is one of three African American women who have announced (their) candidacy for the Arkansas House.”

The primary election pitting candidates from the same party against one another is set for May 20, with the winners from each party advancing to the Nov. 4 general election.
