MESA, Arizona – An Arizona Kindergarten teacher faces 26 counts of indecent exposure and one count of child abuse after he allegedly removed a 6-year-old girl’s shirt that left her naked from the waist up in a packed classroom.

Thomas Washburn, 54, who teaches at Adams Elementary School in Mesa, was arrested Wednesday when the incident reportedly occurred.

Police said something upset Washburn, who started shouting in the classroom filled with two dozen youngsters. The outburst frightened the victim and she hid her face in the top of her shirt, officers said.

The victim’s mother said her daughter was born prematurely and is “developmentally delayed,” according to a police report.

Officers said Washburn told the girl to take her face out of the shirt and when she did not comply, he went to her and completely removed her shirt, leaving her naked from the waist up in front of her classmates for about 10 minutes.

The girl broke down crying, police said. Washburn eventually returned her clothing.

When the victim’s mother arrived after school to pick up the child, Washburn told the parent what he had done, police said. She was extremely upset and immediately contacted the principal’s office, officers said.

Detectives arrested Washburn, who was taken to Mesa Police Headquarters for an interview. He declined to answer any of the detective’s questions.

He was booked at that time for one count of child abuse and one count of indecent exposure. Police said at the time of the incident, there was one adult aide in the classroom.

On Thursday morning, detectives continued their investigation and added an additional 24 counts of indecent exposure, one for each of the students present at the time of the incident, police said.

Mesa Public Schools issued the following statement Thursday afternoon:

“Thomas Washburn has been placed on paid administrative leave and is assigned to home. The district will use the police findings as the basis for any future employment action against Washburn.

  • Retired says:

This is beyond all that is normal and decent inside a classroom.

  • I wonder what this man has been like before this day. Wonder if he snapped or had some type of psychotic break. Yelling out and then doing this and then telling the parent straight out, just makes me wonder if this is completely out of character for him or if this is who he is, why was he teaching?

    • Glenn says:

After reading the article my thoughts were did this teacher break under some sort of stress? Is he physically/mentally sick? I would think that anyone one in their right mind would realize that this act is wrong, wrong, wrong.

  • Rhonda Mabry says:

he should be immediately fired ……..to traumatize a 6 yr.old who is already developmentally delayed……..he should be deeply ashamed!

  • me says:

This teacher should consider himself lucky that daddy wasn’t there for pickup. I wonder if he would have had the stones to tell her daddy what he had done. This poor little girl will have to remember that nightmare for the rest of her life. Maybe the teacher should have to stand on a street corner for eight hours with his pants down on a cold day.

  • This is bull teachers are not who they use to be. Time to kick some butt and do a better job of making sure these teachers get tested and counseling just like everyone else

  • Laura says:

The article doesn’t refer to the aid, other than to say one was present, however she or he had a duty to immediately intervene and report the behavior. The aid should be terminated as well! I hope he/she was and the article just failed to mention it.

  • Charley says:

” This poor little girl will have to remember that nightmare for the rest of her life.” Really? Oh. Good. Grief. Granted he probably over reacted but to say he has dramatized her is silly. And as for indecent exposure, she’s six years old for heavens sakes At 6 she probably still plays outside without a shirt . Stop trying to over sexualize children.

  • Charley says:

    * should be “traumatized”, not “dramatized “.

  • Kristi says:

I have a kindergertener who would have been horrified and extremely embarrassed by this Charley. If this had happened to her, I would probably be in jail too because I would have knocked that teacher out cold.

  • timothy says:

    Yes, get em Kristi! Haha

  • AGT C says:

I do not like violence but this guy deserves a good old fashion behind kicking and then make him run naked through his neighborhood so all his neighbors can get a good gross look!

  • Pat Harmon says:

OMGosh this man should had been FIRED!!!! He’s a sick scumbag!!!!

  • I’m sure the teacher union will fight the teacher’s removal from the school.

  • Joy says:

This teacher is still getting paid and sitting at home. Thats stupid why can people do things like this and still be paid. Fire him put him on the pedifile sight and dont pay him. Stupid school.

  • Sarah 1 says:

Lock this guy up and throw away the key. No pay, no retirement, no way!
