Mort Marshall, a former Farmington police chief, is seeking to become Washington County sheriff in the 2014 election, according to a post on the social-media site Facebook.

Washington County Sheriff Tim Helder declared last month that he is running for re-election.

Saying he will be a “hands-on sheriff,” Marshall announced his candidacy on Friday (Jan. 24) on a campaign Facebook page he created a few days before that. The Facebook page indicates he is a Republican.

According to his campaign Facebook page, Marshall has served as a patrol officer in Lincoln, Ark., and a part-time patrol officer Elkins, Ark. He also served part time as a member of the Washington County Sheriff’s Posse, he says on the Facebook page.

“In 2014, voters will have the opportunity to point Washington County law enforcement in the right direction,” he says on the Facebook page. “The safety of our families, friends, and communities should be the first priority of law enforcement. This is your chance to put a ‘hands-on sheriff’ in place! Now is the time for a true law enforcement professional and leader who will put your needs first.”
