A Fort Smith man was arrested Wednesday after police say he tried to rob a local bank with a “cannon-shaped figurine”.

David Alan Bruce, 52, was arrested by responding officers on suspicion of attempted aggravated robbery, disorderly conduct and public intoxication. He remained Wednesday night in the Sebastian County Detention Center on $25,000 bond, according to Fort Smith police.

Bruce entered the First National Bank on Grand Avenue around 2:42 p.m. and went into the branch manager’s office, where he “sternly and repeatedly demanded cash, causing her to set off the bank’s alarm,” according to a statement released by local police.

Police said Bruce also placed a miniature cannon on the manager’s desk while demanding thousands of dollars.

Officers responded to the active hold-up call and spoke with the branch manager, who told them Bruce was sitting in her office. Police were then able to confront Bruce and arrest him.

There were no injuries reported in the alleged robbery.
