Craig Miller, a Republican living in Ponca, was set to announce his candidacy for lieutenant governor on Thursday (Feb. 6) but has delayed the announcement because of winter weather.

Miller told his Facebook friends on Thursday: “We have received numerous contacts from people wanting to come to our event tonight but they are concerned for their safety due to the road conditions. Your safety is more important than this announcement. We will delay the announcement until the roads clear up in a few days.”

The Newton County resident had been scheduled to declare his candidacy on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Neal’s Cafe in Springdale. The cafe is owned by state Rep. Micah Neal, R-Springdale.

Miller would be the third declared Republican in the race. State Reps. Charlie Collins, R-Fayetteville, and Andy Mayberry, R-Hensley, also are running. On the Democratic side, Central Arkansas businessman John Burkhalter is vying for the seat.

Other candidates are said to be considering running for the office, including U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Ark., who has previously said he is not seeking re-election to Congress.

The primary election is May 20, with the winners from each party advancing to the Nov. 4 general election.

Former Lt. Gov. Mark Darr, a Republican from Springdale, resigned Feb. 1 after being fined by the state Ethics Commission for spending violations.
