The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are investigating the killing of a juvenile bald eagle in Logan County, according to a recent news release.
A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the shooting.
The bald eagle was discovered south of the town of Scranton. The investigation showed authorities that the bird was shot between Jan 12 and Jan. 18.
Because of the injuries sustained, it’s unlikely that the bald eagle flew far from where it was shot.
The bird died on Feb. 7, due to multiple fractures of its right wing, according to the news release.
Bald eagles are protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, both federal and state wildlife statutes.
Any violation sf these laws carry maximum criminal penalties of up to $100,000 and/or one year in federal prison.
