The Office of Human Concern, based in Rogers, helps families that meet certain criteria with their propane bills. The organization serves Benton, Carroll, and Madison Counties.

"I've seen people that we've never seen before and they are very distraught," said Caren Barrett with the Office of Human Concern.

The extreme cold temperature has caused a propane shortage making prices skyrocket. According to propane-prices.com, prices have doubled in the first week of February.

Barrett said they've seen an increase in people asking for help this year.

"They've run out of unemployment, there's no income coming into the home, they don't know how they're going to pay their bills and that's what we are here for so we can help them get over that hump," Barrett said.

"Sometimes it feels like a band-aid to the problem but everybody needs help and you shouldn't be ashamed to ask," she said.

There's also the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps families with energy costs.
