Snow Blamed For Multi-Car Pileup In Fort Smith

A multi-car pileup was reported on Phoenix Ave. in Fort Smith about 7:30 p.m. An officer on the scene tells 5NEWS one vehicle hit a slick spot, causing it to hit several other vehicles, creating a chain reaction. The officer said he estimated several thousand dollars in property damage from the crash. No injuries were reported.

"People are dangerous when they are driving," said driver Karen Hill.

A dispatcher with the Fort Smith Police Department said several accidents were reported on Waldron Rd., Free Ferry Rd. and several hills within the city.

The Greenwood Police Department and Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office reported at least 10 accidents on Highway 71 and Highway 10 near Greenwood. At several times throughout the evening lanes were blocked due to accidents.

The Van Buren Police Department said officers worked multiple accidents on Alma Highway, Highway 59 and Fayetteville Rd. No injuries were reported.

Hill said drivers need to take precaution when heavy snow falls.

"I go extra slow and I make sure that I have plenty of room before I stop," said Hill.

Highway 59 near Howe and Heavener is snow covered, according to the LeFlore County Sheriff’s Office. Several accidents were reported on that highway as well.
