Greenwood’s Compton Eyes Second Straight Title

Bulldogs’ wrestler posted 37 wins in regular season but eyes state championship in 138-pound division

It's said that defending a championship is often harder than winning a title.

If that's the case, no one told Greenwood's Taylor Compton.

After going 38-3 last season and winning the state championship, Compton has followed that with a 37-1 mark this season and eyes the 138-pound crown.

Despite being the number one seed in this weekend's state tournament, Compton is changing his game plan.

"I like to set up my offense and if they play defense it will make them do offense and I’ll go off their mistakes," Compton said.

Compton's only loss this season came in the 143-pound weight division. Even though he's undefeated in his preferred weight class, Compton and his coach aren't looking ahead to a potential state title match.

"As a wrestler it’s just the amount of pressure you put on yourself and a lot of times what we try to do is stay in the same routine," Greenwood coach John Kincade said. "We try to take every match the same but leading up to the state finals I’ve tried telling him that you can’t worry about the state finals you have to take that first match first."

"Right now I’m just thinking one match at a time," Compton said. "I’m going through every match in my head. One match at a time and I can’t plan ahead because you never know."

Compton may not be looking ahead but if he can win a state championship this weekend in Little Rock, he could look back at what might be the best wrestling career in Greenwood history.
