Crawford County One Step Closer to New Jail

Leaders in Crawford County met Monday (Feb. 17) and approved a ballot title on a tax increase vote that would help build a new $20 million detention center.

The current facility has failed several state inspections and has been placed on a probation for overcrowding problems.

“We made (the ballot title) very specific and we think that it will be a title that the voters can understand, and when they go to the polls in May, they’ll be able to read it and know exactly what they’re voting for,” said Carrie Jernigan, a Justice of the Peace for the Quorum Court.

Crawford County residents will be voting whether to increase the sales tax three-quarters of a cent.

One quarter of the tax will go towards the maintenance of the jail. The remaining half a cent will fund both the land they need and the cost of building the new facility, according to officials.

Crawford County Sheriff Ron Brown is hopeful residents will vote for the tax increase in May, and said he’s doing his part to make sure this new tax passes this time around.

“I think the [Justice of the Peace] and myself  and local law enforcement really need to get out and educate the public on what’s going on,” said Brown.

Officials said they are working to get this new jail built to make sure they have enough room to house all of their inmates and keep the public safe.

Officials said that by May, they’re hoping to be able to tell the public the exact price tag of the new jail, as well as where it will be built.

Some states are working the inmates on 12 hour shifts. while the day shift crew is working, the night shift crew is sleeping. Inmates are chained and shackled together and perform jobs in unison such as digging and cleaning ditches during the daytime and sweeping streets at night with hand brooms. works very well and allows them to get their exercise while creating more jail space.

      That will work also..
Our Jails and Prisons needs to STOP OPERATING LIKE A HOTEL or a VACATION SPA..

Yes the prisoners think they live in the Hilton.Criminals live better than our seniors.Prison or jail is supposed to be miserable not a homeless shelter!!!

I hear they are gonna get their money one way or the other. If we do not pass the tax then they are just gonna raise property taxes so that means that only home owners will be paying for the new jail.We are pretty much forced to pass the tax or else.I had rather pass the tax and all the bums have to pay taxes at the stores also than to make our property taxes go up.Thats what I do not understand I pay $1000 a year in property taxes and do not even live in a rich neighborhood I live in a middle class neighborhood. My question still is WHERE IS ALL THIS MONEY GOING?I am tired of paying for stuff that is only for the mayor’s friend like the laminated brick across main street. How does that benefit the whole city or county it doesn’t!!!

I could care less if the state puts the jail “on probation”. In fact, just let the state take the whole thing over. I am not raising sales tax another 3/4 of a cent for a prision. Water Parks, Schools, Libraries, and Community Centers are one thing, but a prision for nearly a whole pennies increase makes no sense. Do like the Sheriff in Arizona and make them sleep outside, eat bologna sandwiches, get rid of coffee, and perform community service. By the way, why did they build the current jail right on Downtown Mainstreet where they are trying to attract tourists!!

Why has the idea not even been presented by the quorum court to combine efforts with another county….much like Franklin County has… to have a jointly funded two county jail? There could be several counties paying for and sharing a jail. I also do not know where the “donated” land to build a new jail went. At one time there was land that owners wanted to donate to the county for building a new jail. I for one am sick to death of more taxes and higher property taxes when the tax proposals don’t pass.

Maybe the state should do an audit!!!

We passed a tax for city jail back in 2008 and then again in 2012 so where did the original tax money go?When is the senior center gonna be built? When is the new police station going to be built? Are they gonna wait till 2016 and holler we need another tax hike?
