A stirring scene at Mizzou Arena: Former Missouri Defensive end Michael Sam, who last week announced that he was gay, returned to campus with his foot-ball team-mates — for Missouri basketball game against Tennessee on Saturday.
They received a standing ovation as they were honored at halftime for their Cotton Bowl Victory over Oklahoma State. Fans erupted when Sam hoisted the trophy.
There was also a “Stand for Sam” event outside Mizzou Arena with more than a thousand people turning out. That gathering was done in part to drown out about 15 anti-gay protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church.
