A fire call came in at 12:10 pm today about flames being spotted at the Jenny Lind exit off I-540 on the south side of Fort Smith, according to Battalion Chief Teddy Abbey.

Abbey said around 10 acres of grass, brush and trees burned in the fire.

It took approximately 20 minutes to get the flames under control and another two hours to mop up and put out all the hot spots.

The cause is officially undetermined at this time, but it was most likely started by someone tossing a cigarette from a vehicle along I-540 since the fire came from that direction, according to Abbey.

Dry conditions and heavy wind caused the flames to spread quickly.

One challenging aspect of the fire was getting access to the property. Firefighters had some difficulty accessing the area, which is why it took a while to put out.

Three fire trucks and a brush truck responded, but no one was hurt. No structures were involved in the fire.
