Beeks Aces Eastern Illinois in Opener
The Arkansas baseball team opened the weekend series against Eastern Illinois with a 6-2 win at Baum Stadium Friday afternoon.
Coach Dave Van Horn hinted earlier in the week he would like to move Jalen Beeks to closer, but Beeks is making his case to be the Diamond Hogs’ ace.
The junior from Praire Grove (2-0) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, bringing his season total to 11 2/3 innings without a run. Beeks also struck out five batters.
Arkansas scored first in the bottom of the third with an RBI double by freshman Andrew Benintendi, scoring Clark Eagan. They pushed that lead to 2-0 later in the inning on a fielders choice by Brian Anderson.
The Hogs added another run in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to make it 6-0.
Arkansas struggled from the plate after that, recording only four total hits, and none after the fifth inning.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
