Williams Leading Greenwood Into 6A Tournament

Senior guard has school scoring title and a state championship on her resume but eyes a second title

State tournament time is when teams see the leaders step to the forefront. Greenwood won't have to wait until Thursday's opener in the 6A state tournament in Jonesboro to find out who their leader is though.

Lundon Williams has been in that spot the entire time. For four years.

Williams is already the school's all-time leading scorer and is just four wins away from capping her career in style.

"I’ve been very blessed to play four years rather than just three and I think that’s helped me grow which has helped me be able to play at the next level," Williams said.

Williams will  play at Harding University next fall.

"She’s definitely a great leader," Greenwood forward Megan Hartness said. "Even when something is not doing good, she helps us up. She’s never negative. She’s always positive towards us and she’s definitely one of the best leaders that I’ve had."

Greenwood should have no issues against J.A. Fair on Thursday and the Lady Bulldogs should be the heavy favorite to win a 6A state championship. And Williams is a big reason why.

"Having a point guard as your leader does help a lot, especially with the amount of experience that she has had is just like having another coach out on the floor that knows what needs to take place," Greenwood coach Clay Reeves said.

Williams helped Greenwood win the 2012 state title in 5A but it's going to take more than just her scoring to bring home a championship in her senior season.

"The scoring ability and her ability to dish the ball off to the open person is just great for her to be able to see the floor and do all those things that she does with the ball," Reeves said.

"It’s going to take a lot of focus and it’s going to take team work, lot of selflessness and us just going out there and doing what we know how to do," Williams said.
