It came as little shock when UAFS’ Seth Youngblood was named the Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year.

Youngblood, a Roland native, tied for the team lead with 14.5 points per game and shot .500 on the year. Youngblood hit 72 3-pointers during his freshman season and was 78 percent from the charity stripe.

Youngblood was also selected to the Heartland Conference Second Team.

“It’s great that the league recognized Jake and Seth’s contribution to this year’s team as well as their individual talents,” UAFS coach Josh Newman said. “Seth has had an exceptional year and has established himself as one of the top guards in the league.”

Senior guard Jake Toupal shared the team lead in scoring and was named the league’s most valuable player.

Youngblood was one of two Lions to start all 26 team games and leads UAFS into this weekend’s Heartland Conference tournament at the Stubblefield Center. The Lions will face the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Friday.
