Police are no longer seeking a suspect in a Fayetteville shooting that hospitalized a man identified as Everett Payne last month.

Payne has been uncooperative with police officers about the Feb. 24 incident at his home on 4378 Chaparral Lane, leading the police department to close the case, said Sgt. Craig Stout, police department spokesman.

The white 33-year-old man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder in what was being called a home invasion. Payne told officers he fought with a black man over a gun, officials said. Payne was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center and soon released.

“His initial statement to officers was that a black male had entered into his home armed with a handgun,” Stout said at the time. “There was a struggle for a handgun in one of the back bedrooms.”

Police later issued a suspect description and said they were searching for a gunman.
