The Northside girls basketball team was the defending 7A state champion but could not keep the crown Thursday night. The Lady Bears fell to Conway, 74-67, at Summit Arena in Hot Springs.
Conway used a 30-7 run in the second quarter, including seven first half three pointers to take a 20 point lead at the half, 39-19.
“Second period I’ve never seen a team shoot like that,” said Northside coach Rickey Smith. “It was unbelievable. Any time we tried to gamble and get a steal, whoever was open drained a three.”
“We knew if they were open they’d hit the shots and if we didn’t keep somebody on them they would keep hitting them,” said Northside senior Jill Myers.
Northside made it close in the third quarter going on a 17-5 run and cutting the lead to six, 53-47, going into the fourth.
The Conway responded to stop the bleeding and the Lady Bears would get no closer.
Northside ends the season as state runner-ups with a 25-4 record.
