Huntsville Comeback Not Enough In 5A Title Game

Huntsville suffered from a slow start and couldn’t get closer than three points in the fourth quarter.

The Huntsville Lady Eagles fell to Paragould in the 5A state championship, 56-48, Saturday night at Summit Arena in Hot Springs.

Huntsville suffered from a slow start, getting down, 19-11, in the second quarter. Paragould then took an 11 point lead into half time, 30-19.

That's when the Lady Eagles made their comeback. Behind clutch baskets by Brittanie Gragg and Vanessa Burgess, Huntsville cut the lead to 35-33 heading to the fourth.

However, a pair of quick turnovers to start the final frame that turned into points doomed Huntsville. Paragould then pulled away late.

It's a tough pill to swallow because the ladies had multiple chances to get control of the game late.

"That was very disappointing because we felt like we had them on the ropes," said Huntsville coach Charles Berry. "We picked up a couple turnovers off them and it changed the moment."

Burgess led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 27 points.
