For the first time in any sport since 1957, the Mountainburg Dragons played in a state championship game Saturday. The Lady Dragons lost to Spring Hill, 67-44, for the 2A title at Summit Arena in Hot Springs.
“They had an answer for everything we offered them,” said Mountainburg coach Dan Garringer. “That’s the mark of a good basketball team, and they are a good basketball team.”
Mountainburg struggled early, getting down 21-11 after the first quarter, and Spring Hill continued to build that lead. Once the fourth quarter started, the game was out of reach.
“We were down most the ball game and whenever you’re down like that it gets in your head a little bit,” said Mountainburg player Tara Webb. “It’s hard to come back and get back in the ball game.”
Mountainburg returns home with plenty to smile about, one of the best seasons in school history.
