A Benton County inmate received an eight-year prison sentence Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting another inmate at the county jail.

Adam Cline, 32, reached a deal with prosecutors in which he pleaded guilty to failure to register as a sex offender and second-degree sexual assault. He was sentenced to eight years in prison and an additional 12 years of a suspended sentence.

Cline, of Springdale, could have faced up to 70 years in prison if he had received the maximum penalty for each charge, said Stuart Cearley, Benton County deputy prosecutor.

Cline, a sex offender, was being held at the Benton County Jail after police said he failed to properly register with authorities on his current address. While in jail, authorities said Cline entered the cell of another inmate and tried to force him to engage in a sex act. That situation was later reported to jail officials and law enforcement.

Cline’s trial was set for Thursday, prior to the plea deal.
