The two candidates for the Sallisaw police chief job tied in an election last month, after the previous chief resigned in an embezzlement scandal. Now the election process is starting all over again, to break the tie.

Early Sallisaw voters are preparing to hit the polls this week.

"I want to be the chief. That's always been a desire of mine. I've worked here for 25 years," said chief candidate Terry Franklin.

"I'm excited. I'm ready to get this show on the road and get busy,” said chief candidate Sandy Girdner.

Girdner wants more manpower and growth on the force. Franklin said he would like to see more school resource officers.

When Franklin and Girdner tied in an election for the chief job, a plan to draw a name out of a hat was in place. The election board then decided to hold a special election.

The date of the new election was set for April 1. If the candidates once again tie on that day, a name will be drawn out of a hat to determine the winner, board members told 5NEWS.

"I really didn't know what to think. I've never seen a tie," said Franklin.

"I don't like it because we are by election, not by drawing a name out of a hat," said Girdner.

Early voting is scheduled for Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in all polling locations.
