City and County leaders are investing in recreation by breaking ground on several new projects at Ben Geren Park in Ft. Smith.

Crews are currently building two softball fields with a concession stand. Park leaders said a scoreboard will be installed Tuesday (March 25).

Also in the works: The Terrain Lake project and upgrades to the miniature golf course and soccer fields.

Bidding for the new $10.9 million aquatic center will begin April 10, and construction is set to begin in May.

"Once we know what the bids are and what the total is, we can breathe another sigh of relief ," said Sebastian Co. Judge David Hudson. "I'm hoping that the cost will come in within our budget and we can get all of the features that are outlined in the final plan."

The new water park will include a wave pool, four water slides and a lazy river.
